Learning Basic Korean Responses. I’ve been thinking about what kind of Korean to teach you today. For travelers visiting Korea, what kind of conversations would be the most useful? Whenever I travel abroad, I always study essential phrases in the local language beforehand.
But I’ve noticed that most travel phrasebooks focus on questions, not answers. So when I’m actually abroad, I can ask questions, but I often can’t understand the answers!
이번 시간에는 어떤 한국어를 알려줄지 고민을 했어요. 한국으로 여행오는 여행객에겐 실제로 어떤 회화가 필요한지 말이죠. 저는 대부분 해외로 여행을 떠날 때 항상 그 나라의 필수표현들 미리 공부하고 가는데요.
대부분 여행회화에는 질문형식으로는 문장이 있지만 질문에 대한 대답이 없는 경우가 많다보니 실제 외국여행을 나가면 질문만 하고 대답을 못 알아들을 경우가 많더라고요. 그래서 오늘은 한국어로 대답 표현을 먼저 배우고 그 이후에 여행에 필요한 필수표현들을 배워볼게요!
Korean Responses – Part 1(기본 대답 표현 배우기-1)
Affirmative (긍정표현)
*Korean – English – Romanization (한국어-영어-로마자표기순)
• 네 (Yes) – Ne (nay)
• 예 (Yes – formal) – Ye (yeh)
• 응 (Yeah – casual) – Eung (oong)
• 어 (Yep – casual) – Eo (uh)
• 맞아요 (That’s right) – Majayo (ma-ja-yo)
• 맞아 (Correct – casual) – Maja (ma-ja)
• 그래요 (Okay / Sure) – Geuraeyo (geu-rae-yo)
• 그래 (Okay – casual) – Geurae (geu-rae)
• 좋아요 (Good / Sounds good) – Joayo (jo-a-yo)
• 좋아 (I like it – casual) – Joa (jo-a)
• 당연하죠 (Of course) – Dangyeonhajyo (dang-yeon-ha-jyo)
• 당연하지 (Definitely – casual) – Dangyeonhaji (dang-yeon-ha-ji)
• 그럼요 (Of course / Sure) – Geureomyo (geu-reom-yo)
• 알겠습니다 (I understand – formal) – Algesseumnida (al-ge-sseum-ni-da)
• 알겠어요 (Got it – polite) – Algesseoyo (al-ge-sseo-yo)
• 확실해요 (I’m sure) – Hwaksilhaeyo (hwak-sil-hae-yo)
• 확실해 (Definitely – casual) – Hwaksilhae (hwak-sil-hae)
• 그렇습니다 (That’s correct – formal) – Geureosseumnida (geu-reo-sseum-ni-da)
• 그렇지요 (Indeed – polite) – Geureochiyo (geu-reo-chi-yo)
Negative (부정 표현)

• 아니요 (No – polite) – Aniyo (a-ni-yo)
• 아니 (No – casual) – Ani (a-ni)
• 안 돼요 (No way / Can’t do – polite) – Andwaeyo (an-dwae-yo)
• 안 돼 (Not allowed – casual) – Andwae (an-dwae)
• 몰라요 (I don’t know – polite) – Mollayo (mol-la-yo)
• 몰라 (I don’t know – casual) – Molla (mol-la)
• 글쎄요 (I’m not sure) – Geulsseyo (geul-sse-yo)
• 별로예요 (Not really – polite) – Byeolloyeyo (byeol-lo-ye-yo)
• 별로야 (Not really – casual) – Byeolloya (byeol-lo-ya)
• 싫어요 (I don’t like it – polite) – Sireo-yo (shi-reo-yo)
• 싫어 (I don’t like it – casual) – Sireo (shi-reo)

Today, we covered some of the most commonly used positive and negative responses. There are quite a lot, right? It might seem tricky at first, but the more you practice these, the easier it’ll be to have conversations in Korean.
These responses are super handy because you can use them anytime to react to someone’s questions. Take your time and practice along!
오늘은 가장 많이 사용하는 긍정, 부정의 표현을 먼저 배워봤어요. 굉장히 많은 표현들이 있죠? 쉽지 않겠지만 이 표현들을 배워둘수록 한국어로 대화하는 게 더 쉬워질거예요.
이 대답들은 대화할 때 상대의 질문에 호응해줄 수 있고 언제든 사용할 수 있는 일반적인 표현이니 천천히 따라해보세요!
